News and History of the MNG Developers from 2002

Herein lie news items and historical stuff regarding MNG. Feel free to poke around, but note that some of the links, particularly the older ones, may be broken. Keep in mind that this is history here...

• 26 November 2002 - Version 1.1 of the MNG specification is approved by official vote of the MNG developers (although the results aren't actually announced until 8 January). It clarifies that the ``interframe delay'' also applies to the interval after the final frame is displayed, regardless of whether the animation loops, and that decoders must insert a background layer regardless of the framing mode (FRAM chunk); these changes affect only the full MNG specification, not the low-complexity subset (MNG-LC) or JNG. It also notes the possibility of patent issues with regard to JNG (due to its use of JPEG) and includes a bunch of minor editorial fixes.

• 20 October 2002 - A veritable explosion of new (or at least newly discovered) MNG-supporting applications resulted in the splitting of the MNG-supporting Applications page into ten new pages today:

  • Image Editors
  • Image Converters
  • Games / Entertainment
  • Office / Business Applications
  • Scientific / Graphing Applications
  • Miscellaneous Applications

  • Libraries and Toolkits
  • Hardware
  In all, there are about 80 applications, libraries, and devices listed. Go, MNG!

• 23 June 2002 - libmng 1.0.4 is released. This is a maintenance release that merely fixes some small bugs. The Windows binaries are compiled against zlib 1.1.4 and lcms 1.08.

• 11 March 2002 - zlib 1.1.4 is released. This version fixes a security vulnerability (CERT note, Red Hat advisory) wherein specially crafted, invalid deflate streams can trigger zlib to free a memory buffer twice, leading to potential denial-of-service attacks (and perhaps worse). This bug additionally depends on the version of malloc/free in the platform's C library not checking for such cases; AIX and almost all Linux systems (glibc-based) are vulnerable, but Windows, Mac OS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and HP-UX reportedly are not.
